
A landlocked country in the southern part of Africa, the Republic
of Botswana covers an area of 580,000 square km and has a population of 1.64
million. Most of the local residents are Christians and some in rural areas
believe in traditional religions. The official language is English and the
Tswana language is extensively used. Gaborone is the national capital. The
current president is Festus Mogae.
Since China and Botswana established diplomatic relations on Jan.
6, 1975, bilateral relations have been developing in a smooth and sound manner.
The two countries have signed agreements on cooperation in trade and investment
protection, education and culture.
Botswana's President Mogae visited China in 2000. Wei Jianxing,
then a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC
Central Committee, visited Botswana in 2002. Wu Guanzheng, a member of the
Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, visited
Botswana in 2006.
Botswana is now a destination country for Chinese citizens and
tourist groups. Bilateral trade reached 62.52 million U.S. dollars in
2005.
