
Located in the western part of Africa, the Republic of
Guinea-Bissau covers an area of 36, 000 square km and has a population of 1.59
million belonging to 27 ethnic groups. The majority of the country's religious
population is Muslim, Fetishism and Christian. Portuguese is the official
language. Bissau is the national capital. The current president of Guinea-Bissau
is Joao Bernardo Vieira.
Sino-Guinea-Bissau relations have been growing steadily since the
two countries restored diplomatic relations on April 23, 1998. Guinea-Bissau led
the world in carrying out cooperation in deep-sea fishing. Guinea-Bissau's
president Joao Bernardo Vieira visited China in 2002. Bilateral trade was 5.79
million U.S. dollars in 2005.
