
The
Republic of Cape Verde is located in the North Atlantic's Cape Verde islands,
consisting of 10 islands. It covers an area of 4,033 square km and has a
population of around 510,000. Most of local residents are Creoles of mixed
black and European ancestry and most of them are Catholics. The official
language is Portuguese, and the national capital is Praia. Cape Verde has a
parliamentary system. The current president is Pedro Verona Rodrigues
Pires, and the prime minister is José Maria Pereira Neves.
Since China and Cape Verde established diplomatic relations
on April 25, 1976, bilateral relations have been growing smoothly. Both
sides have carried effective cooperation in areas such as politics, economy and
trade, culture, education, health, and increased coordination in international
affairs. In 2002, Xu Jialu, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the
National People's Congress, visited Cape Verde. In 2004, Cape Verdean Prime
Minister Neves visited China. Bilateral trade came to 5.19 million
U.S. dollars in 2005.
