
Located in the southwestern part of the African continent, the
Republic of Namibia covers an area of 820, 000 square km and has a population of
about two million, mostly being Christians or believing in primitive religions.
English is the official language. Windhoek is the national capital. Namibia
declared independence in 1990, marking the fact that Africa had finally
completed decolonization. The current president is Hifikepunye Pohamba.
The relationship between Namibia and China has been developing
smoothly since the countries established diplomatic ties on Mar 22, 1990. The
two countries have signed a variety of agreements on trade, investment
protection, culture, and education. Li Changchun, member of the Standing
Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, visited Namibia in
2005. In the same year, president Pohamba visited China. Namibia has become a
destination country for Chinese tourists and tourist groups. Bilateral trade
came to 140 million U.S. dollars in 2005.
