The Union of Comoros, composed of a group of
islands in the West Indian Ocean, covers an area of 2,236 square km and has a
population of 780,000. The major ethnic groups are Antalote, Cafre, Makoa,
Oimatsaha, and Sakalava. The main religion is Muslim. The official languages are
Shikomoro, French and Arabic. Moroni is the national capital. The
current president is Ahmed Abdallah Mohamed Sambi. Since China and Comoros established
diplomatic ties on Nov.13, 1975, bilateral relations have been growing
smoothly. President Azali Assoumani visited China in 2003. Minister of Foreign
Affairs Li Zhaoxing visited Comoros in 2004. Bilateral trade reached 1.83
million U.S. dollars in 2005. |
