
Located in the southeastern part of West Africa, the Federal
Republic of Nigeria covers an area of 920,000 square km and has a population of
133 million, more than any other country in Africa. It has many ethnic groups,
with a majority of residents believing in Islam and Christian. Current President
of Nigeria is Olusegun Obasanjo. English is the official language. Abuja is the
capital city.
Sino-Nigerian relations have been growing steadily since the two
countries established diplomatic relations on Feb. 10, 1971. Great success have
been made in bilateral cooperation in cultural, educational and health areas.
Jiang Zemin, then Chinese president, Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing
Committee of the National People's Congress, President Hu Jintao visited Nigeria
in 2002, 2004 and 2006 respectively. Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo
visited China in 2005. Bilateral trade stood at 2.83 billion U.S. dollars in
2005.
